Real vs. Fake

did you know that refineries hate having their photos taken?

No really, we got chased off when we were scouting locations by security at SunCor.

None the less, I’ve already been asked “did you photoshop that cover on issue #3?”

And the answer is no, as an art director, I’m somewhat of a purest, and if we can get the shot, we do everything we possibly can to capture a “real” image based on the concept we are shooting. Now there are all sorts of great color and highlight enhancements we can do in photoshop, and we’re not going to pretend that we don’t use those, but in the case of this photo, I shot these as a record of the day with my Canon PowerShot digital camera while we were setting up.

The cover shot by Todd Van Fleet, has the model (Bo) actually standing on a stack of old railroad tracks, and those two refineries that are in the frame, were actually physically there, and the clouds are formed as they appear in the photo… I was there, and will attest to its authenticity. It’s awesome when the idea you had in your mind turns out 10x better than you ever expected.

This is the actual cover of issue#3
